Function: - may play a role in hematopoietic differentiation - may play a role in inflammation Structure: belongs to the cystatin family Compartment: - secreted - may be targeted through the Golgi via the secretory pathway Expression: - expressed in heart, placenta, lung, liver, skeletal muscle & pancreas - not expressed in brain - up-regulated by LPS Pathology: - barely expressed in most tumor cell lines, but upregulated in some cancer cells, inlcuding a) breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells & U251 cells b) promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60) or c) myelomonocytic leukemia cells (U-937)
