cyclopentolate (Cyclogyl)
Tradename: Cyclogyl.
Indications:
- induction of mydriasis & cycloplegia for procedures
- uveitis, posterior synechiae
Dosage:
1) 1 drop followed by another in 5 minutes
2) give 40-50 minutes prior to procedure
3) apply finger to lacrimal sac during & for 1-2 minutes following instillation to reduce frequency of systemic adverse effects
4) Mydriasis: 1 drop QD-TID for 1-2 days
5) Cycloplegia: 1 drop QD-TID for 1-2 days
6) use 0.5% solution for children
Ophthalmic: 0.5 % 1.2%
Pharmacokinetics:
1) maximal mydriasis & cycloplegia in 15-60 minutes
2) usual duration of action is 24 hours
Adverse effects:
- not common (1-10%)
- tachycardia, restlessness, hallucination, psychosis, hyperactivity, seizures, incoherent speech, ataxia, burning sensation, increased intraocular pressure, loss of visual accomodation, allergic reactions
Mechanism of action:
- blocks cholinergic stimulation in the ciliary body & sphincter muscle of the iris
