cyclopentolate/phenylephrine (Cyclomydril)
Indications:
- induction of mydriasis & cycloplegia in diagnostic procedures
Contraindications: glaucoma
Pharmacokinetics:
1) maximal mydirasis & cycloplegia in 15-60 minutes
2) usual duration of action 24 hours
Dosage:
1) 1 drop every 5-10 minutes
2) do NOT exceed 3 times
3) apply finger pressure to lacrimal sac during & 1-2 minutes following application for medication to reduce frequency of systemic side effects
Adverse effects:
1) burning senstation (frequent)
2) blurred vision
3) sensitivity to light
4) local irritation
5) increased intraocular pressure
Mechanism of action:
1) cyclopentolate blocks action of acetylcholine
2) phenylephrine stimulates alpha-1 receptors
