Matter dissolved in a solvent, exerting an osmotic pressure & capable of being dialyzed across a membrane. It is generally capable of being crystallized. Contrast with colloid. Indications: - may be superior to saline in critically ill ICU patients [2] * not superior to saline outside of ICU [2]
