critical illness cognitive impairment (post-ICU cognitive impairment)

Etiology: - critical illness, especially - sepsis - acute respiratory distress syndrome - risk factors - age - duration of mechanical ventilation - glycemic control: hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia - duration of delirium [3] - duration of coma apparently not a factor [3] - this may not be reproducible - benzodiazepine use apparently not a factor [3] - other studies would suggest interaction of long-term benzodiazepine use & cognitive impairment in the elderly Epidemiology: - occurs in up to 75% of critically ill patients Clinical manifestations: - appears to be acquired dementia [2,3]
