cosyntropin (Cortrosyn)

Indications: - cosyntropin-stimulation test - aid in diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency - infantile spasms [2] Dosage: 0.25 mg IV or IM over 2 minutes Adverse effects: hypersensitivity reactions Drug interactions: 1) test does not interact with prednisone, dexamethasone or beclomethasone 2) cortisone & hydrocortisone may cause high baseline cortisol & paradoxical decrease in cortisol following administration of cosyntropin 3) estrogens cause elevated baseline cortisol, but normal incremental response to cosyntropin should occur 4) spironolactone may cause high cortisol levels to be reported when fluorometric analysis is used
