Today contraceptive sponge

Available Fall 2005. OTC Indications: - birth control - 84-90% effective - less effective in women who have given birth Contradindications: 1) does NOT prevent sexually transmitted disease 2) use with caution if sensitive to polyurethane or sulfa 3) should not be worn for more than 30 consecutive hours. Pharmacokinetics: 1) effective immediately afetr insertion & for 24 hours 2) must remain in place for at least six hours after intercourse Adverse effects: - sensitivity to nonoxynol-9 may cause localized burning, itching, redness, or irritation (these symptoms typically subside within a few days to a week) Mechanism of action: - soft, disposable, polyurethane foam containing the spermicide nonoxynol-9
