Tradname: Welchol Pregnancy category: apparently safe during pregnancy [2] Dosage: - 3.75 g QD or divided BID Tabs: 625 mg Adverse effects: 1) better tolerated than older bile acid resins 2) less likely to cause constipation 3) constipation, heartburn, nausea, eructation, bloating Drug interactions: - less likely interfere with absorption of other drugs than older bile acid resins Mechanism of action: 1) bile acid sequestrant 2) lowers LDL-cholesterol by 19% 3) lowers plasma glucose by unknown mechanism [2] Notes: Also see cholestyramine.
