Shampoo. Tradenames: Tegrin, Pentrax, Polytar Gel: Tradename: Estar. Coal tar extract bath: Tradenames: Balnetar, Zetar. Indications: Shampoo 1) dandruff 2) scalp psoriasis 3) seborrheic dermatitis Gel - relief of itching & scaling associated with psoriasis Coal tar extract bath - relief of itching & scaling associated with psoriasis Contraindications: Caution: 1) avoid contact with eyes, genital or rectal area 2) avoid direct sunlight exposure pregnancy-category: ? safety in lactation: ? Dosage: Shampoo 1) apply shampoo daily 2) alternative instructions: a) massage small amount into wet hair b) rinse c) apply a second time & leave for 5-10 minutes d) rinse thoroughly e) use at least twice weekly Gel - apply to affected area QD-QID Coal tar extract bath 1) 1-3 capfuls in bath 2) soak for 10-20 minutes Shampoo: 0.43% & 0.5% coal tar. Gel: 5%. 3 oz. Solution: (Carbonis detergens, LCD): 1) 2.5%. 7.5 oz. 2) 300 mg/mL. 6oz. Adverse effects: Shampoo 1) discoloration of light hair 2) dermatitis: skin irritation, itching 3) folliculitis 4) staining of the skin & hair Gel 1) skin irritation 2) itching safe; no increased risk of cancer [4] Drug interactions: 1) MAO inhibitors 2) epinephrine Mechanism of action: 1) antipruritic agent 2) anti-eczematous agent 3) keratoplastic agent
