cloning
1) creation of a clone or clones
2) recombinant DNA techonology used to produce millions of copies of a DNA fragment
Comparative biology:
- Dolly the sheep
- 2 macaque monkeys successfully cloned [2]
Notes:
- Dolly was cloned from the mammary cell of a 6 year old sheep with an unfertilized egg from another sheep [1]
- despite the consensus that Dolly's death was a result of a common lung disease, not related to her cloning, ref [3] suggests that Dolly's early demise was due to her start in life with a reduced number of telomeres, thus providing support for the telomere theory of aging*
* the difficulties with this argument are numerous
