Pathology:
- chronic renal failure
- dysregulation of calcium & phosphorus homeostasis
- alterations in plasma calcium, plasma phosphorus & regulatory hormones (PTH)
- alterations in bone mineralization (osteopenia)
- dystrophic calcification
Laboratory:
- serum phosphorus elevated
- serum calcium may be elevated
Management:
- normalize plasma phosphorus
- non-calcium based phosphate binders
- sevelamer, lanthanum carbonate
- avoid hypercalcemia
