CD8
Function:
- identifies cytotoxic/suppressor T-cells that interact with MHC class I bearing targets
- CD8 is thought to play a role in the process of T-cell mediated killing
- signal is transduced by the associated tyrosine kinase lck
- activation results in phospholipase activity (presumably PLC)
Structure:
- heterodimer of CD8-alpha & CD8-beta, linked by two disulfide bonds, or
- heterodimer on thymocytes & as homodimer of CD8-alpha on peripheral blood T-lymphocytes
Expression:
- mature peripheral T cells ~25-35%
- most cytotoxic T cells
- CD4/CD8+ thymocytes
- NK cells ~30%
- cortical thymocytes ~70-80%
Laboratory:
- a marker for cytotoxic T cells, present on 30% of peripheral T cells
