CD38; ADP-ribosyl cyclase 1; cyclic ADP-ribose hydrolase 1; cADPr hydrolase 1; T10

Function: - synthesizes cyclic ADP-ribose - also has cADPr hydrolase activity - ATP inhibits the hydrolase activity - involved in adhesion between leukocytes & endothelial cells Structure: belongs to the ADP-ribosyl cyclase family Compartment: membrane Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: (widely expressed) - plasma cells (strong immunoreactivity) - lymphoid progenitor cells - thymocytes - NK cells - B cells - T cells - monocytes - erythroid & myeloid precursors - brain - muscle - kidney - pancreas - liver - testis - ovary - placenta Pathology: - expressed in: a) lymphoma b) neuroblastoma Notes: - may be produced at very low levels due to a premature stop codon in the mRNA, leading to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay
