Function:
1) acute phase-regulated receptor
2) clearance & endocytosis of hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes by macrophages
3) uptake & recycling of iron
4) induces a cascade of intracellular signals that involves tyrosine kinase-dependent Ca+2 mobilization, IP3 production & secretion of IL6 & CSF1

- induced by anti-inflammatory mediators
