cardiac arrhythmia supression trial (CAST)
Patients with asymptomatic or mildly asymptomatic ventricular ectopy after myocardial infarction had decreased survival rates with drug therapy, despite the observation that the drugs eliminated or diminished the ectopy. Death rate was increased 3-4 fold in the treated group. Flecainide, ecainide, & moricizine were evaluated. Other studies have found similar results for the class IA agents quinidine, procainamide & disopyramide & the class IB agent mexiletine.
