carbinoxamine/dextromethorphan/pseudoephedrine (Cardec-DM, Rondec-DM)
Tradenames: Cardec-DM, Rondec-DM.
Indications:
1) relief of cough & symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection
2) nasal congestion & rhinorrhea associated with allergies or the common cold
Contraindications:
1) narrow-angle glaucoma
2) bladder neck obstruction
3) symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
4) stenosing peptic ulcer
5) concurrent MAO inhibitor therapy
6) coronary artery disease
7) pregnancy, lactation
Caution: patients with hypertension
Dosage:
1) adults: 5 mL syrup every 4-6 hours
2) children:
a) 18 months-6 years: 2.5 mL syrup every 4-6 hours
b) > 6 years: 5 mL syrup every 4-6 hours
3) maximum: 4 doses/day
Syrup: carbinoxamine maleate 2 mg/mL + pseudoephedrine HCl 25 mg/mL + dextromethorphan HBr 4 mg/mL (240 mL)
Adverse effects:
1) tachycardia
2) sedation
3) anticholinergic effects
4) paradoxical excitement
5) restlessness
