A ketone distilled from the bark & wood of the evergreen tree Cinnamonum camphora, fond in Southeast Asia.
It is also prepared synthetically from oil of turpentine.
Pharmacology:
Uses:
1) topical antibiotic
2) antipruritic agent
3) topical agent for upper respiratory tract infection
- along with menthol & eucalyptus oil, component of Vicks Vaporub
Adverse effects:
- pungent odor leads to the perception of efficacy in Vicks VapoRub despite lack of objective improvement
- abnormal liver function tests
