calcium acetate (PhosLo)

Ca(OCOCH3)2 Indications: - treatment of hyperphosphatemia in renal failure - renal osteodystrophy - treatment of electrolyte disorders - hypermagnesemia, hypocalcemia, hyperkalemia - hypocalcemic tetany [3] - cardiac arrest secondary to hyperkalemia [3] Dosage: 2 tabs PO TID after meals Tabs: 667 mg. Pharmacokinetics: 1) 20% absorbed & eliminated by the kidneys 2) majority is not absorbed & is eliminated in the feces Adverse effects: - uncommon (< 1%) 1) hypercalcemia 2) headache 3) hypophosphatemia 4) nausea/vomiting 5) constipation 6) abdominal pain 7) thirst 8) anorexia Drug interactions: 1) may antagonize effects of calcium channel blockers 2) may decrease absorption of tetracyclines & quinolones 3) may increase toxicity of digoxin, precipitating arrhythmias Mechanism of action: 1) binds dietary phosphate in the gut to form calcium phosphate 2) calcium phosphate is eliminated in the feces
