biotin (vitamin B7, vitamin H)

Function: - coenzyme in the metabolism of fatty acids & leucine - role in gluconeogenesis - role in the citric acid cycle - functions in the transfer carbon dioxide - cofactor in several carboxylases: a) acetyl-CoA carboxylase b) 3-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase c) propionyl-CoA carboxylase d) pyruvate carboxylase Epidemiology: - biotin is present in food protein bound or as biocytin Pathology: - avidin in egg whites binds to biotin rendering it unavailable - avidin is denatured by heat - biotin deficiency is rare Dosage: - recommended daily allowance is 3 ug/day - up to 300 mg/day has been prescribed for multiple sclerosis [2] Test interactions: - high intake make result in falsely low serum troponin [2] - interference with thyroid function tests with biotin > 5-10 mg/day - high free T4, low serum TSH [3]
