benzoate/phenylacetate (Ammonul)

Indications: - treatment of hyperammonemia Dosage: 1) loading dose 500 mg/kg (250 mg/kg of each drug) infused over 90 minutes 2) maintenace 500 mg/kg/day Adverse effects: - particulate matter may impact the safe use of Ammonul [2] Mechanism of action: 1) phenylacetate combines with glutamine to form phenylacetylglutamine which is excreted in the urine 2) benzoate combines with glycine to form hippurate which is excreted in the urine 3) reduced influx into the urea cycle
