barium enema; air contrast barium enema (lower GI series)

Air contrast barium enema (ACBE). Indications: - detection of colorectal carcinoma - evaluation of extent of inflammatory bowel disease - evaluation of other colonic disease - diverticulosis - intussesception - CMV colitis - Hirschsprung's disease - intestinal obstruction Preparation: 1) GoLytely the evening prior to procedure (4 liters). 2) reglan 10 mg PO may be added Procedure: - x-rays of the abdomen are taken while the colon is filled with barium through the rectum
