Function: - probable ligand for integrin in the brain - non catalytic metalloprotease-like protein - role in regulation of cell adhesion & spreading & in inhibition of cell proliferation - interacts through its C-terminal region with YWHAB & YWHAZ (14-3-3 proteins) but not with YWHAE or YWHAH - the precursor is cleaved by a furin endopeptidase Structure: - contains 1 disintegrin domain - contains 1 EGF-like domain - contains 1 peptidase M12B domain Compartment: membrane Alternative splicing: named isoforms=5 Expression: - highly expressed in the brain - detected slightly or not at all in other tissues Pathology: - expressed in some high-grade but not low-grade gliomas Note: - may be produced at very low levels due to a premature stop codon in the mRNA, leading to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay
