Function: - may act as an inducible transporter in the biliary & intestinal excretion of organic anions - acts as an alternative route for the export of bile acids & glucuronides from cholestatic hepatocytes (putative) Structure: - belongs to the ABC transporter family, conjugate transporter (TC 3.A.1.208) subfamily - contains 2 ABC transmembrane type-1 domains; residues 311594 & 971-1252 - contains 2 ABC transporter domains; residues 629-851 & 1323-1330 Compartment: membrane Alternative splicing: named isoforms=4 additional isoforms seem to exist some isoforms may be produced at very low levels due to a premature stop codon in the mRNA, leading to nonsense- mediated mRNA decay Expression: - mainly expressed in the liver - also expressed in small intestine, colon, prostate, testis, brain & at a lower level in the kidney
