Consumption:

- pregnant women advised to injest only moderate amounts
- U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued statements that aspartame does not pose a threat to the general population.

- potential benefit in glycemic control [2]
Adverse effects:
- artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame & acesulfame-K) are associated with increased cancer risk (RR=1.15 for aspartame) [3]
- WHO declares aspartame a possible carcinogen - link to hepatocellular carcinoma [5]
- aspartame at doses < 15% of FDA maximum daily allowance can fuel anxiety [4]
