Tradename: CustomFlex Artificial Iris
Indications:
- damaged or completely missing irises
- adults & children with congenital aniridia & albinism
- traumatic injury or surgical iris removal resulting from melanoma
Procedure:
- composed of thin, foldable silicone, sized & colored individually for each patient
- surgeon makes a small incision, inserts the device under the incision, unfolds it & smooths out the edges
- artificial iris is held in place by existing eye structures or, if needed, by sutures.
Mechanism of action:
- reduces sensitivity to bright light
- can also enhance the cosmetic appearance in the eye for aniridia patients
Notes:
- 70% of patients report decreases in glare, light sensitivity & better quality of life
