Origin: formed by bifurcation of the basilar artery
Branches:
1) precommunicating part (P1)
a) posteromedial central arteries
b) short circumferential arteries
c) thalamoperforating arteries
d) collicular arteries
2) postcommunicating part (P2)
a) posterolateral central arteries
b) posterior medial choroidal branches
c) posterior lateral choroidal branches
d) peduncular branches
e) thalamogeniculate artery
3) terminal or cortical part (P3) also referred to as the lateral occipital artery [2]
Course:
-> curves around cerebral peduncle & reaches medial surface beneath the splenium of the corpus callosum; gives off temporal, calcarine, parieto-occipital branches [1]
