It may be divided into 4 parts: 1) cervical 2) petrous 3) cavernous 4) cerebral Origin: -> common carotid artery (opposite the upper border of the thyroid cartilage, C4 vertebral level) Branches: 1) anterior cerebral artery (terminal branch*) 2) middle cerebral artery (terminal branch*) 3) hypophyseal arteries 4) posterior communicating artery 5) anterior choroidal artery 6) ophthalmic artery * terminal branches within the middle cranial fossa
