genus of herbs with about 30 perennial species, belonging to the sunflower family (Asteraceae) Uses: - used in liniment & ointment preparations used for strains, sprains, & bruises Adverse effects: - contains the toxin helenalin, which can be poisonous if large amounts of the plant are eaten - gastroenteritis - GI hemorrhage - contact with the plant can also cause skin irritation Mechanism of action: - contain thymols
