apoptosis inhibitor 5; API-5; antiapoptosis clone 11 protein; AAC-11; cell migration-inducing gene 8 protein; fibroblast growth factor 2-interacting factor; FIF; protein XAGL (API5)

Function: - antiapoptotic factor - protein assembly (putative) - negatively regulates ACIN1 - by binding to ACIN1, suppresses ACIN1 cleavage from CASP3 & ACIN1-mediated DNA fragmentation - suppresses E2F1-induced apoptosis - depletion enhances the cytotoxic action of chemotherapy acetylation at Lys-251 impairs antiapoptotic function - monomer - interacts with FGF2 & ACIN1 Structure: - two regions, an N-terminal (aa 96-107) & a C-terminal (aa 274-311) are required for binding FGF2 - belongs to the API5 family Compartment: - mainly nucleus, also cytoplasm - isoform 3 is cytoplasmic Alternative splicing: - named isoforms=5 - additional isoforms seem to exist Expression: - expressed in heart, brain, placenta, lung, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney, pancreas - highest levels in heart, pancreas, placenta
