Function: - hormone required during early development for endoderm differentiation & heart morphogenesis - acts as a ligand for the apelin receptor (APLNR) & promotes its internalization - acts as a motogen by promoting endoderm & mesendoderm cell migration during gastrulation via the apelin receptor - role during heart development via the apelin receptor - interacts with APLNR (putative) Structure: - belongs to the elabela/Toddler family Compartment: - secreted, extracellular space Expression: - highest expression in undifferentiated embryonic stem cells - rapidly down-regulated during differentiation
