Elderly patients are prone to antibiotic side-effects. Etiology: 1) penicillin-induced a) hypernatremia b) hyperkalemia c) hyperchloremic alkalosis 2) aminoglycosides & vancomycin a) ototoxicity b) nephrotoxicity 1] therapeutic drug monitoring 2] creatinine clearance 3) dose-related neurotoxicity associated with: a) penicillin b) ceftazidime c) imipenem d) quinolones 4) bleeding secondary to coagulopathy associated with: a) anti-Pseudomonal penicillins b) some cephalosporins 1] cefmetazole 2] cefotetan 3] cefoperazone 4] cefamandole c) prophylactic vitamin K may be useful in malnourished patients receiving parenteral nutrition
