aminophylline (ethylene diamine/theophylline, Somophyllin-DF)
A 1:1 complex of ethylenediamine & theophylline.
Tradenames: Somophyllin, Somophyllin-DF.
Contraindications:
- pregnancy-category C
- safety in lactation ?
Dosage:
1) Intravenous:
- Load 6 mg/kg IV over 20-30 minutes.
- Drip 1 g in 250 mL D5W (4 mg/mL) at 0.5-0.7 mg/kg/hr (70 kg: 0.7 mg/kg/hr = 11 mL/hr).
- Pediatrics: 1 mg/kg/hr.
2) Oral: 200 mg PO TID/QID.
Tabs: 100 & 200 mg.
Liquid: 125 mg/5 mL.
Pharmacokinetics:
- elimination: liver
Adverse effects: (also see theophylline)
1) uncommon at serum concentrations < 20 ug/mL
2) not common (1-10%)
- nausea/vomiting, restlessness, tachycardia
3) uncommon (< 1%)
- skin rash, insomnia, irritability, tremor, seizures, gastric irritation, allergic reactions
