aluminum hydroxide/magnesium hydroxide (Maalox, Mylanta)
Indications:
- symptomatic treatment of dyspepsia, GERD & peptic ulcer disease (PUD)
Contraindications:
pregnancy-category +, ? (1st trimester)
safety in lactation ?
Dosage:
- 1 tab or 15-30 mL PO PRN.
Pharmacokinetics: elimination: kidney
Adverse effects:
1) constipation
2) decrease in GI motility
3) long term use in patients with renal failure may result in aluminum toxicity
4) diarrhea may occur with magnesium-containing products
5) long-term use of magnesium-containing products in patients with renal failure may lead to hypermagnesemia
Mechanism of action:
- neutralizes gastric acid
Notes:
- Maalox Plus & Mylanta II have added simethicone
