alpha-1-fetoprotein (AFP) [Multiple of the median, MOM] adjusted in serum/plasma

Reference interval: AFP specimen concentration * M O M = Median AFP concentration for gestational weeks * M O M = Multiple of the median AFP values in maternal serum: Maternal serum AFP values from 1,500 unaffected, singleton pregnancies expressed as the regressed median & multiples of the regressed median (MOM) for gestational weeks 15 to 21 are shown in the table below: Weeks Specimens Median ng/mL MOM=2.0 MOM=2.5 MOM=3.0 15 237 34.3 68.6 85.8 102.9 16 220 39.3 78.6 98.3 117.9 17 217 45.1 90.2 112.8 135.3 18 213 51.8 103.6 129.5 155.4 19 212 59.4 118.8 48.5 178.2 20 201 68.2 136.4 170.5 204.6 21 200 78.3 156.6 195.8 234.9 Clinical significance: - Human serum or plasma & amniotic fluid at 15 to 21 weeks gestation to aid in the detection of fetal open neural tube defects (NTD). - Test results when used in conjunction with ultrasonography & amniotic fluid acetylcholinesterase testing are a safe & effective aid in the detection of fetal open NTD. - Maternal serum levels > 2-fold the median should be investigated with ultrasonography.
