- plays a role in weight homeostasis
- may play a role in regulation of melanocortin receptors within the hypothalamus & adrenal gland, & thus in the central control of feeding
Structure:
- the presence of a 'disulfide through disulfide knot' structurally defines this protein as a knottin
- contains 1 agouti domain
- 25% identy to human agouti
Compartment: secreted (putative)
Expression:
- expressed primarily in adrenal gland, subthalamic nucleus, & hypothalamus
- lower level of expression occurring in testis, lung, & kidney
Pathology:
- defects in AGRP may be a cause of autosomal dominant obesity
