adapalene (Differin gel)
Indications: treatment of acne vulgaris Now OTC. [3]
Contraindications:
Warnings:
1) patients with sunburn should not use adapalene until full recovery
2) do not apply to lips, eyes, mucous membranes
pregnancy-category C
safety in lactation ?
Dosage:
1) cleanse area prior to application
2) allow skin to dry 20-30 minutes
2) apply QHS in a thin film
Gel 0.1%
Patient instructions:
1) minimize exposure to sunlight
2) avoid washing face more than 2-3 times/day
3) discontinue use temporarily if irritation occurs
4) avoid using topical alcohol preparations during treatment
5) wash hands thoroughly after application
Adverse effects:
1) common (> 10%)
- erythema, scaling, dryness, pruritus, burning
2) uncommon (< 1%)
- skin irritation, stinging sunburn, acne flares
Drug interactions:
- concurrent use of any other topical agent that may cause local irritation may result in additive drying effect
