6 minute walk

Indications: - evaluating prognosis in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) - evaluating prognosis in patients with COPD Procedure: - distance a patient can walk in 6 minutes - pulse oximetry done at rest & with exertion Clinical significance: - >= 837 meters in 6 minutes predicts low 8 year mortality - useful to assess disability, need for supplemental oxygen, & prognosis for chronic lung disease
