5-times sit-to-stand test (5xSST)

Indications: - assessment of age-related functional capacity - evaluation of falls in the elderly - assessment of whether Navajo patient can safely remain in hogan [1] Clinical significance: - tests lower extremity strength & transitional movement - osteoarthritis of the knee may inhibit transitional movement - tests for orthostasis or vestibular disorder - orthostasis should probably be excluded prior to testing [1] - tests balance Procedure: - timed test - with arms wrapped around chest, patient stands & then sits 5 times (use of arm rests not allowed) - in one variant the patient is given 30 seconds, in another 1 minute Interpretation: - > 11.4 seconds to complete suggests risk of falls * 1 minute sit-to-stand superior to 30 seconds in elderly women [4] Notes: - get-up-&-go test & assessing ability to get down & up from the floor more informative
