Indications: - evaluation of carcinoid tumor Reference values: - 2-9 mg/24 hours (10-47 umol/24 hours) Clinical significance: - sensitive & specific for carcinoid Increases: - seen in carcinoid syndrome Specimen: - 24 hour urine - 48 hours before undergoing 5-HIAA urine collection, patients should avoid foods rich in 5-HT (bananas, avocados, grapefruit, tomatoes, eggplant, hickory nuts, walnuts) [3]
