zinc protoporphyrin in erythrocytes (ZPP)
Indications:
1) indicator of iron-deficiency
2) once widely used to screen for lead exposure in children, but is NOT reliable at lead (Pb) concentrations of < 250 ug/dL (0.40 umol/L)
Specimen:
1) whole blood (heparin or EDTA)
2) store at 4 degrees C
3) avoid hemolysis
Reference values:
1) 17-77 ug/dL (0.27-1.23 umol/L)
2) 30-80 umol zinc protoporphyrin/mol of heme
Increases:
1) clinical disorders
a) iron deficiency anemia
b) lead poisoning
c) mild iron-deficiency seen with inflammation or accelerated erythropoiesis
d) hyperbilirubinemia
2) pharmaceutical agents
a) digitalis
b) riboflavin
3) hemolysis
4) interferences may be reduced by washing erythrocytes
