cantharidin (Cantharone, Ycanth)
Tradename: Cantharone. 0.7% colloidin solution.
Indications:
1) common warts
2) plantar warts
3) molluscum contagiosum
Dosage: Use:
1) application followed by occlusion for 24 hours
2) a blister forms, which heals within 1 week
Liquid: 0.7% in a film-forming vehicle containing: acetone, pyroxilin, castor oil & camphor, 7.5 mL.
Adverse effects:
1) not common (1-10%)
- syncope, delirium, ataxia, dermal irritation, dermal burns, acantholysis, GI hemorrhage, rectal bleeding, dysphagia, priapism, fatty degeneration, hyper-reflexia, conjunctivitis, iritis, keratitis, proteinuria, hematuria, burning of oropharynx
2) other
- pain from the blister
- formation of a ring wart (treatable)
