whiplash (neck hyperextension)

Etiology: -> violent injury resulting in an unsupported head moving rapidly backward & forward with hyperextension & hyper- flexion of neck muscles Pathology: - does NOT imply any specific pathology Complications: - psychological trauma can be significant - carotid artery dissection Management: - patient education & reassurance - physical therapy of little benefit [4] - management of carotid artery dissection if indicated
