vimentin (VIM)
Function:
- class-3 intermediate filament proteins
- phosphoprotein; phosphorylation is enhanced during cell division, at which time vimentin filaments are significantly reorganized
- component of a complex composed at least of ACTB, AP2M1, AP2A1, AP2A2, MEGF10 & VIM
- interacts with LGSN & SYNM (putative)
- belongs to the intermediate filament family
Structure:
- homopolymer
- intermediate filament protein
Expression:
- highly expressed in fibroblasts, some expression in T-cells & B-cells
- found in various non-epithelial cells, especially mesenchymal cells
Pathology:
- little or no expression in Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines
- expressed in many hormone-independent mammary carcinoma cell lines
- interacts with HCV core protein.
- co-expressed with cytokeratins in > 50% of
- renal cell carcinoma
- endometrial adenocarcinoma
- spindle cell carcinoma
- thyroid follicular carcinoma
- salivary gland carcinoma
- co-expressed with cytokeratins in < 10% of
- colorectal adenocarcinoma
- breast ductal-lobular carcinoma
- lung non-small cell carcinoma
- prostate adenocarcinoma
- endocervical adenocarcinoma
