vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII)
Somatic sensory function.
Afferents:
Vestibular nuclei
1) located in posterior medulla medial to the cochlear nucleus
2) receives sensory input (equilibrium) from ear via the vestibular ganglion
Cochlear nucleus
1) located in posterolateral medulla lateral to the vestibular nucleus
2) receives somatic sensory (hearing) input with cell bodies for primary sensory neurons located in the spiral ganglion
Course:
- courses superiorly from the lateral aspect of the rostral medulla to the internal acoustic meatus
