Function: - cell-cell recognition - leukocyte migration/leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion - interact with integrins alpha-4/beta-1 (VLA4) on leukocytes Structure: - either 1st or the 4th Ig-like C2-type domain is required for VLA4-dependent cell adhesion - contains 7 Ig-like C2-type domains (immunoglobulin-like) Compartment: - membrane; single-pass type 1 membrane protein Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 comment=additional isoforms seem to exist Expression: - macrophage-like and dendritic cell types - inflamed vascular endothelium - induced by cytokines, including IL-1, TNF-alpha Pathology: - may play role in a) atherosclerosis b) rheumatoid arthritis Laboratory: - vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 in serum/plasma
