vasectomy

Indications: - in connection with prostatectomy for prostate cancer - to produce sterility in men Procedure: - excision of a segment of the vas deferens - California state law requires that any patient wishing a vasectomy must 1st attend an informational class prior to the procedure Complications: - 5 year risk of pregnancy after vasectomy is about 1% [3] - either no association or weak association between vasectomy & a) prostate cancer - not associated with increased risk of prostate cancer [4,5] - 0.6% absolute increase in prostate cancer risk [5] - no associations between vasectomy & incident high-grade, advanced, or fatal prostate cancer [5] b) testicular cancer [4]
