vagotomy

Indications: - duodenal ulcers refractory to medical therapy - gastric outlet obstruction Procedure: - surgical division or cutting of the vagus nerve - truncal vagotomy functionally denervates & disconnects multiple organs, including the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, & proximal colon - selective vagotomy disconnects only the stomach Complications: - vitamin B12 deficiency may develop from a diminished production of intrinsic factor Notes: - truncal vagotomy may decrease risk for Parkinson's disease [3]
