Study characteristics: - 1791 veterans, mean age 60 years - long-standing diabetes type 2 (mean duration 11.5 years) Groups: - intensive therapy - standard therapy Follow-up: - 5.6 years Results: - mean hemoglobin A1c 6.9% with intensive therapy - mean hemoglobin A1c 8.4% with standard therapy - no differences in outcomes a) death from any cause a) macrovascular complications 1] cardiovascular deaths 2] time to 1st cardiovascular event b) microvascular events 1] retinopathy 2] nephropathy 3] neuropathy - hypoglycemic events more frequent with intensive therapy
