vaccinia virus

Closely related to cowpox. Uses: used in smallpox vaccine (Dryvax) Epidemiology: - infection spread by direct contact, not aerosolization Pathology: 1) causes infections localized to the site of innoculation 2) lesions do contain live vaccinia 3) putative receptor: epidermal growth factor receptor Clinical manifestations: 1) generally localized to the site of innoculation 2) vesicular or pustular lesions may occur 3) lesions are NOT likely to occur on oral mucosa* 4) encephalitis in severe cases * distinguishing feature from smallpox Laboratory: - vaccinia virus serology - vaccinia virus DNA Management: 1) contact isolation
