upper airway resistance syndrome
One of 3 entities along the spectrum of obstructive sleep disordered breathing syndromes which include:
1) primary snoring
2) upper airway resistance syndrome
3) obstructive sleep apnea
Pathology:
1) increased ventilatory effort
2) recurrent electroencephalographic arousals
3) no apnea or hypopneas
Clinical manifestations:
- excessive daytime hypersomnolence
Laboratory:
- quantifiable measurement of respiratory effort
- esophageal pressure monitoring
Management: oral appliances
